Frequently Asked Questions

I would like to add another household / minor household unit to my site. Can I do this?

Green sites generally face no restrictions. Red sites need to meet the given minimum size, to allow a second wastewater connection. Regardless, your site still needs to comply with Manukau City Council’s District Plan.

How do you define a household?

It is a building or part of a building intended to be used as an independent residence. This includes any apartment, townhouse, dwelling house, flat or home unit. It excludes a minor household unit.

How do you define a minor household unit?

It is the smaller of two household units, sharing a single site and not exceeding 60m2 (floor area).

After referring to the Catchment maps, I’m still uncertain of my site’s colour and catchment number. What should I do?

Please email Manukau Water Limited ( manukauwater@manukauwater.co.nz) with your query and site’s address.

Why do the Minimum Site Areas vary across catchments?

Variances in each individual catchment’s sewage capacity and population density means that site area minimums will vary accordingly. The table reflects the restrictions, given such current variables.

How are the catchment upgrades prioritised?

The improvement of catchments is an on-going objective for Manukau Water Limited. Catchments are prioritised based on their environmental impact from wastewater overflows, and growth centres as planned by Manukau City. Please refer to the company’s Asset Management Plan for further details.

Do these restrictions apply to non-residential developments?

As non-residential developments vary substantially, please email Manukau Water Limited ( manukauwater@manukauwater.co.nz) with your query and site’s address.
