Manukau Water Standards
What are Design and Material Standards?
These are engineering standards for working on public water and wastewater services in Manukau City. It consists of two sections namely Water Supply and Wastewater which will provide a guideline to the design and construction of public water and wastewater systems to Manukau Water’s design and material standards. Information about approved products and suppliers are also available under each section.

services your property. This document details your rights and
obligations when dealing with Manukau Water Limited.
Public Drains
The wastewater systems downstream of your connection are owned by Manukau Water Limited. The wastewater drains are generally considered public, and therefore owned and operated by Manukau Water Limited, once they leave your property. In most instances the pipes within your property are considered private drains, to be owned and maintained by the property owner. The public drains can only be operated or worked on by a contractor that has been approved by Manukau Water Limited. These contractors are called Approved Contractors (AC’s)
Network Growth Charge
From 3rd July 2006, new developments connecting to Manukau Water
Limited’s water and wastewater systems will be subjected to a
Network Growth Charge. This has been introduced to
ensure that enough funds are available to build and maintain
infrastructure to meet the growing demand of services in our
city. It is a one - off fee, payable at the time of Building
Consent application, which must be paid by developers or
builders to connect properties to Manukau Water Limited’s water
and wastewater networks.
Building in close proximity to a public line
Any building or structure within 2m of a public drain is considered as being in close proximity to that drain and will require consent from Manukau Water Limited to work within this area.

Back flow prevention
Back flow is the flow of liquid or contaminants from a property
back in to the water supply. This can be caused by a back pressure
situation due to repairs or breaks in the mains. All industrial and
business developments are required to have a
back flow prevention device fitted to the water meter. This is
essential to protect water quality in the mains and the health and
safety of the communities within Manukau City.
Trade Waste
Trade waste is any liquid waste that is discharged from a
commercial or industrial premise. Waste other than normal domestic
wastewater can be harmful to the wastewater system. A separate
application is to be made to
Watercare Services Limited to obtain consent
for trade waste discharge.
As - built Information
At the completion of development work, the developer’s representative is required to supply as - built drawings in accordance with as-built requirements of Manukau Water Limited’s Design and Materials Standards. The as-built information is to be certified by a chartered professional engineer or registered surveyor that the information is accurate within the acceptable engineering and survey tolerances.
Manukau Water Approval
To maintain the integrity of public water supply and wastewater networks, Manukau Water Limited has an approval system for water and wastewater products, ensuring that only the best products are used in Manukau City. To gain approval for use on the Manukau Water Limited water or wastewater networks each product is assessed to confirm that the product meets operational requirements and is fit for the purpose the product has been supplied for.
