Water Leaks

Wasting water is not just water down the drain it is a precious resource wasted.

My water account seems high, how can I check for leakages

  • Check for any dripping taps (don’t forget the outside taps)
  • Is the toilet/s running continuously or is there water dripping from the overflow pipe outside?
  • Check the hot water overflow on the roof. A leaking Ajax valve in your hot water cylinder will push up you power/gas charges as well.
  • Look in the garden – grass is often very lush above a leaking pipe.
Can you hear the sound of running water at night?
  • Check the water main connections e.g. where it feeds into the house or joins the meter

A meter test will tell you if there is any leakage, just follow these steps
Step 1      First fix all the obvious drips and water leaks.
Step 2      Then find your water meter, it is usually near your front boundary.
Step 3      The meter is normally in a box with a blue or black rectulangar lid on it. Your water meter is located under the lid.
Step 4      Take a reading of your meter noting down all the numbers. Then tell everyone at your place not to use any water.
Step 5      Read the meter again after 2 or 3 hours.
Step 6      Subtract the first number from the second. Do you have a leak?

Our example

Second reading    6543 211
First reading          6542 129
The difference       1082
Our example shows 1,082 litres of water lost.
